Healthy African Families Program
The program, as currently designed, has three components:
-The Family program: provides
for parenting classes taught by a Parent Educator and a Family Counselor. Topics vary from access to health care for
all family members, eligibility for social benefits and housing, to school preparedness and disease prevention (see samples
below). Sessions can be tailored to the specific needs of each African community.
Assistance with filing applications for
benefits is also provided.
-Community Education and Training by
various city professionals on Family health, child welfare, immigration, etc… Educational tools can be translated in
diverse languages to fit the needs of the various African communities (Amharic, Lingala, French, Swahili, Bemba, Tigrina and
more) and events come in the form of educational workshops.
-The African Working Group: representatives
of several African associations in and around Los Angeles County are working at forming one united voice for the
African ethnic communities. Events organized by the Working Group include women's forums, leaders' meetings and African Socials
during which issues to be addressed are discussed.
